Welcome To The Jungle Part 2 - In The Valley Of The Mon-Keigh

Intruders have entered the sacred valley of the Mon-Keigh.

These beasts are Dire Apes and they will not tolerate any trespassers into their territory.

They tend to attack in waves of 34.
Why 34?  Because thats how many of these guys I bought!
Found a good deal and got them for 50 cents a piece.
I didnt paint anything on them, this is how they already are.
Eerie arent they?  The red eyes and inscrutable expressions...
Are they friendly... or hungry?  Who knows.

Caesar: [to Maurice in sign language and breaking and bundling sticks] Ape alone... weak. Apes together... strong.

Here is the western half of the table.  A river separates east and west.  Here in the west, the Dwarves and Gnomes will make their defense against the Mon-Keigh.

Here is the eastern half of the table.  There is high ground in the center.  The Dire Apes will appear from the eastern edge.

The Gnome wizard and the Chaos Dwarf Captain think about placing troops here on the high ground of the eastern side, but decide against it.  High ground is good, but anyone caught here will be on the wrong side of a river and could be easily caught in a pursuit if they break.

The wizard and captain cross the river and examine the main firing ground of the battlefield.  Most of the missile fire casualties will be here, as the Dire Apes approach and cross the river.

Willard: Are you crazy, Goddammit? Don't you think its a little risky for some R&R?
Kilgore: If I say its safe to surf this beach, Captain, then its safe to surf this beach! I mean, I'm not afraid to surf this place!

The wizard decides to defend the trenches alongside the Chaos Dwarves.
Two Gnome crossbows also help in the defense here.

Sgt. O'Neill: Bob, I got a bad feeling on this one, all right? I mean, I got a bad feeling. I don't think I'm gonna make it out of here. You understand what I'm saying to you?
Sgt. Barnes: Everybody got to die sometime, Red.

Behind the trench, to the south is a maze of tall grass.

6 Gnomes are watching this area and hope to ambush any Apes that get through the trench defenders.

Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: I am Gunnery Sergeant Hartman, your senior drill instructor. From now on you will speak only when spoken to, and the first and last words out of your filthy sewers will be "Sir". Do you maggots understand that?
Recruits: [In unison] Sir, yes Sir.

Finally, here is the "Alamo".  The Gnome King is making his stand here in the far western rough and rocky area.
The King has his guards with him.

King: [Watching the ambush party leave into the jungleI'm glad I ain't going with them. Somewhere out there is the beast and he hungry tonight.

Also, the Gnome Engineers have stockpiled barrels of explosive powder here.
Barrels can be detonated by fire arrows from a crossbow, or manually by base contact.
But manual detonation is suicide, the big barrels have a blast radius of 5" and the small barrels of 3"

Between waves they can place barrels where they think the Dire Apes might make their approach.
Before the first Turn begins, they place a big barrel on the south eastern approach, and a small barrel on the opposite shore of the river.

They do the same on the northern side.

And here they come! They are approaching from the south east...

And some have climbed up to the high ground.

The Mon-Keigh are approaching the river.

They look down on the battlefield from the high ground...

And see the trenches of the Dwarves and Gnomes.

They begin roaring and beating their chests!

And come rushing down the hill towards the river

The Apes in the south suddenly are caught in an explosion as the Chaos Dwarves aim fire bolts at the explosive barrel.  Five Apes are knocked out in the blast!

But it doesnt stop the others behind them from moving forward

Some Apes in the south cross the river and are hoping to get under cover of the woods, but another fire bolt hits and detonates another barrel.  Apes are thrown around in the explosion.

The Gnome Wizards casts Fireball on the wall of Apes.
The Chaos Dwarves fire round after round into them.

Because the trenches are under attack, the apes in the south are able to cross the river in peace and get under cover of the woods.
